The Rainbow Papaya

The Rainbow papaya is a bright yellow orange, with a unique papaya flavor, very sweet, and very high in Vitamin C. It ripens slightly slower then the other Hawaiian varieties, but should still be eaten when it gives to a gentle touch which is usually when the skin is 3/4 to fully yellow.
The Sunred Papaya

The Sunred papaya is a pink fleshed papaya, delicious and sweet. Like the Rainbow papaya, it is high in Vitamin C.

The Rainbow papaya is a new variety that was first introduced in 1998. It is a true hybrid cross of Kapoho Solo (the industry standard Hawaiian yellow flesh variety), and the Sunup (another new variety). Rainbow and Sunup were both developed by the University of Hawaii, Cornell University, and USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) in a cooperative effort to produce a papaya that is resistant to the Papaya Ringspot Virus (PRV) papaya that looks and tastes good, preserves the high nutrition, and flavors of the Hawaiian varieties. They succeeded beyond our hopes.

Given varieties named Sunrise, Sunset, Sunup, and marketing names such as Straberry and Watermellon, a lot of people are getting confused. We have chosen to call our pink fleshed solo papayas "Sunred". At the moment these are primarily of the Sunup variety, but the Sunred label will always tell you that it is delicious, sweet, with the color and flavor you expect in a red flesh variety.
